The Chemistry of a Powder Coat

The chemistry of Powder Coating is the same as that of a conventional paint, except that it's applied using a spray gun. The powder is composed of particles of different sizes, shapes, and densities. The powder specific gravities of different samples are similar when no filler is used. However, when fillers are added, specific gravities of paint powders change. These changes are reflected in their specific densities. Hence, different types of fillers can have very different effects on the powder properties.

Advancements in Powder Coating technology continue to make it popular in many industries. The oil and gas industry, for example, has used it to create a pipe-in-pipe product to prevent cracking in large storage tanks. Similarly, other applications include protection for electrical insulation and wire encapsulation. In addition, flow control agents offer multiple benefits to powder coating manufacturers. They reduce cycle time, reduce part reject rates, and protect multi-variable systems.
